The Hive
Principles
The Hive is an egalitarian collective, based upon consensus decision-making, and recognising the need for, and beauty of, individual and collective responsibility for action in agriculture, arts, design and politics. The Hive is based upon permaculture principles of:
* The recognition that all that we do affects the environment * Working with nature rather than against nature * The problem is the solution; transforming challenges into opportunities * Taking small steps to create big changes
Aims
* To get first hand experience of permaculture design and organic growing * To get into the countryside * To make contact with other people in the permaculture movement * To form links and foster understanding between city and rural dwellers * To facilitate inter-cultural understanding between people of different nationalities * To form links with social justice and environmental networks and campaigns
Year One of the Hive: Preparation
* Clearing the land and fire-proofing the land * Observing the land & establishing 'zones' (ongoing) * Maintaining the existing olive trees * Repairing the water source * Maintaining the Paths * Establishing renewable energy sources * Establishing a low-impact camp including compost toilet * Establishing existing outside resources and local links * Fundraising for outstanding land payment * Working on our website page, blog and newsletter (ongoing) * Establishing a network of contacts / support groups / volunteers
Volunteers Policy
* The Hive maintains an information update on the website of the skills and work needs of the collective * The Hive will provide food, shelter, and toilet/washing facilities and opportunities to learn in the permaculture site * Volunteers will be generally expected to work 5-6 hours a day and for a minimum of two weeks * Volunteers need to inform the Hive about their needs and interests and what skills they can contribute * All applications will be considered in the context of the ongoing needs and projects of The Hive
